How the process works
Waste materials are segregated by our customers at source within their offices into separate waste recycling bins and bags.
EMERGE Recycling then collects the waste, securely transporting it to our specialist facility in East Manchester where it is processed. All waste streams are checked for contamination, bulked up in to their respective individual clean streams and sent on to our partner reprocessors for recycling. Wherever possible, we work with partners who are based locally, to reduce our carbon footprint and keep costs competitive for our customers.

Bags
Internal Bins
EMERGE Recycling offers a wide range of colourful, labelled waste and recycling bins, tailored to our office recycling service. We have a wide variety of differently priced bins available suited to your organisation’s needs and budgets. Our bags are designed specifically to fit the bins.
The uBins are our International award-winning premium plastic bins. We are proud to stock a British-made premium bin that is made from 100% recyclable material. These high quality bins are 70L capacity and come with an insert and wrap scheme approved stickers for paper, plastic or cans.
Alternatively, MyBin units are a well-received range of cardboard bins that allow you to set up effective recycling stations within your business at a low cost. The base is incredibly durable as are the lids. These reliable bins are 60L and come with wrap scheme approved stickers for paper, plastic or cans.
If you have a custom requirement, we will work with you and liaise with a number of different bin suppliers to source specific bins to suit your needs.
External Bins
For commercial and trade waste, we provide 240L and 1100L bins, which can be supplied as part of our Commercial Bin Collection service.
How we recycle materials
Paper
Paper is shredded, then baled and stored prior to transportation to a local paper mill (one of the approved companies we work with). At the mill, the paper is reprocessed into industrial hand towels. The majority of our paper is currently sent to the Northwood plant, just 12 miles South-East of Manchester. Working with local partners helps keeps our carbon footprint lower by reducing fuel miles, whilst supporting the local economy and providing more jobs in the area.
Cardboard
Waste cardboard is baled and sent to reprocessing plants. We supply a number of different manufacturing facilities across the UK and Europe but always aim to give priority to those closest to home. The output of this recycled material tends to be industrial grade cardboard.
Plastics
Plastic waste is sent to Roydon in Swinton, a company which supplies the plastic packaging industry. Different types and grades of plastic are kept apart so that they don’t contaminate each other.
Glass
Glass waste goes to Green Hope in Swinton where it is bulked up for onward transport to glass reprocessors. This is one of the few materials that can be directly converted back into its original form again, such as bottles and jars.
Metal
All metals are sent to Bulldog Metals in Manchester. Like glass, metal can be directly converted back in to its original form again, such as metal packaging materials and other products.
Batteries
Batteries are composed of toxic compounds such as acid and heavy metals like Nickel, Cadmium and Lead, and as such, require specialist handling.
EMERGE stores batteries safely and securely to prevent pollution to the environment. We send them to G&P Batteries in Warwickshire, where they are recycled and the metals re-used in the electronics industry.
“G & P Batteries is committed to helping businesses meet their responsibilities towards battery waste. The company has specialist knowledge of the legal issues surrounding the disposal of batteries and a strong social and environmental policy that ensures, wherever possible, that all waste is recycled not only compliantly but also in the most cost-effective manner.”
Wood
EMERGE has its own wood recycling operation on site, where we reuse as much reclaimed wood as possible in exciting and creative ways. Our skilled team creates a wide range of items for sale, including home and garden furniture, restaurant equipment and decorative items. We also process waste wood for resale to the public, builders and DIY enthusiasts. Regularly stocked timber includes batoning, pallet wood, scaffolding boards, fence panels and posts. Please go to our Touch Wood page for more information.
Any redundant wood that we cannot reuse goes to Hadfield Wood Recyclers, based in Droylsden, (just 3 miles from our site), where it is manufactured into bedding for all kinds of animals, from horses to hamsters, as well as other products.
Fluorescent Tubes & Lightbulbs
Fluorescent tubes are an extremely hazardous waste item. They contain mercury and other toxic metals and require extremely specialised handling.
EMERGE Recycling works in partnership with one of the UK’s leading fluorescent tube recycling companies, Mercury, based locally, in Trafford Park. This company is based locally in Trafford Park. They safely extract the mercury from the tubes. They then sell it to lamp manufacturers in a closed-loop system. As a result, the mercury goes straight back into making bulbs and never contacts the environment.
We offer very competitive pricing for this service and manage the subcontractor relationship on your behalf. Additionally, we provide all the required hazardous waste compliance documentation. This allows you to focus on running your business, knowing your waste is being disposed of legally and responsibly.
Toner Cartridges
Toner cartridges are collected, stored and sent to a Ink & Toner Recycling Ltd., based in Milton Keynes. The cartridges are then refilled and sold back to the public.
Office Furniture
EMERGE works with a number of charities and companies in Manchester that specialise in furniture reuse. If furniture is beyond repair, it is broken down into its individual components and materials by our dedicated team. The materials are then sent on to our reprocessing partner companies, wherever feasible.
